Well Wikipedia says;

Direct Selling is a retail channel for the distribution of goods and services. At a basic level it may be defined as marketing and selling products, direct to consumers away from a fixed retail location. Sales are typically made through party plan, one to one demonstrations, and other personal contact arrangements. A text book definition is: “The direct personal presentation, demonstration, and sale of products and services to consumers, usually in their homes or at their jobs.”

Honor Recognizes Scentsy’s Commitment to Simplicity, Quality and Value

DSA Annual Meeting

MERIDIAN, Idaho–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Direct Selling Association (DSA – dsa.org) recently presented its 2009 annual industry awards for outstanding achievement and honored Scentsy Inc. with the first ever Rising Star Award at the DSA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. The Rising Star Award is presented annually to one up-and-coming direct selling company that has dedicated itself to achieving a high standard of excellence in business operations.

Scentsy opened its doors in 2004 with the idea of offering a safe, wickless alternative to burning candles in homes and offices. Scentsy experienced record growth as customers saw its decorative warmers as not just a safer alternative but as a better alternative. Scentsy’s success can be attributed to a simple and valuable product line sold through independent consultants at home parties.

“We always strive at Scentsy to bring value to customers by creating and selling high-quality products that warm the heart, enliven the senses, and inspire the soul,” said Orville Thompson, Scentsy CEO and co-owner. “We are honored that the DSA awards committee has recognized our singular focus on quality and value in the midst of tremendous growth.”

“This award further validates the success we have experienced,” said Heidi Thompson, Executive Vice President and co-owner. “But our success is merely a byproduct of passionate customers and consultants, and an outstanding corporate team, who have shown great enthusiasm for our products and parties.”

Each year the Direct Selling Association gathers for its annual meeting and hosts its annual Awards Banquet. The DSA presented awards in the areas of technology innovation, partnership, sales force development and program excellence. The five companies honored during the association’s annual meeting were ACN Inc., Mary Kay Inc., Oxyfresh.com, Scentsy Inc. and ServiceQuest. Oxyfresh.com, ServiceQuest and Scentsy are all based in Idaho.

I recently listened this these mistakes on a conference call and I thought I would share them with you. I know I am gulilty of  not doing some of these are you?

1. Hostess Coaching

Not keeping in contact with your Hostesess, Once your Hostess agrees to have a home party it is up to you to keep on top of things. Such as mailing invites, does she need more catalogs, did she call all her invitees to make sure they are coming.

2. Talk People Into Hosting Or Joining Your Opportunity

Most people do not like to be “talked” into anything. Plant seeds, water them and they will grow.

3. Talk Too Much

Do you know what a dedicated listener is? No! Be quiet and let them talk, again most people love to talk about themselves. If you are waiting for them to be quiet so you can jump in, then you are not being a dedicated listener. You can find out most things about a person if you just be quiet!

4. Don’t Have A Plan

You joined this opportunity and now what? In direct sales it is not necessary to have a formal business plan, however you should have clear and definite goals that you would like to achieve with your new business.

5. Don’t Use The Support

I know from experience that most direct sales companies offer some type of training. Go to your upline that is what they are there for, use your companies message boards, listen and watch your companies webinars (if they offer them). There is lots of ways to get the support you need, however do not use it as a crutch be proactive and find the answers yourself.

6. Do Not Like To Use The Phone

I know this is me hands down, I feel as if I am bothering people. Because I know when I get calls I want to get off the phone ASAP!  I have learned do not look at it as bothering, they either requested the info you are offering and wanted to learn more. Right! So come at it from that prospective, don’t go right into your spile. Talk about family, what they do for a living, where they want to go on vacation etc…

7. Needers Instead Of Leaders

Once you have began to build your team, it is up to you to encourage your people. That way they want to perform. If you come at from “I need you guys to sell this much, so I can move up in rank” Would you? I don’t think so!

8. Do Not Invest In Your Own Personal Growth

I am not saying you have to go out and buy every single book, cd, eBook, mp3 downloads. What I am saying is if you are running your direct sales business as a business and not a hobby, then why wouldn’t you invest in the best of everything this direct sales world has to offer?  There is a lot of FREE training out there as well, you don’t always have to buy everything.

To your Success!

Whether you’re starting anew or moving your business online, the process of establishing your business on the internet can be a rewarding move. In recent years, the importance of doing so has become more obvious, not only as an increasing amount of online successes seem to be reported and spoken of, but the trend has also been noticeable in the education sector with a growing number of business courses becoming more accessible and popular. Here are my 5 key points to consider when starting or moving your business online:

5. Niche
The importance of you or your product being niche online cannot be underestimated. By researching what you are selling or offering you will soon establish how competitive your market is – and although there might be far less people looking for a particular specialized product than the large generic ones, if you can offer exactly what that narrower target need then you are likely to find success sooner, instead of being swamped by an unwelcome gang of already-established market leaders.

4. Expertise
Along similar lines to the above, be sure to offer something of which you have a particular expertise. Although we may be experiencing something of a backlash to the term “expert” in this age of innumerable souls who proclaim themselves so (and whose actual knowledge is quite dubious), it will be far easier for you to succeed online if you don’t need to learn your market from scratch.

3. Think outside the ‘website box’
When a lot of people consider moving or going online, they tend to think of establishing a website that shows their stuff, and leaving it at that. Essentially, it must be remembered that the internet is far more than just a bunch of sites – and those that succeed are the people who can discern what works best for them and who can manage a healthy balance between their site and communicating via blogs, social networks, wikis, forums, microblogs, etc.

2. Patience
In addition to thinking beyond your beloved website, you will soon discover that establishing yourself online involves a great degree of patience. This is something to bear in mind when pouring over the analysis of traffic to your blog, before updating your Facebook page, and fine-tuning the spelling errors on your site. Do not expect to be considered an expert by everyone overnight.

1. Content
Finally, it is an oft-spoken mantra that ‘content is king’. Consider your campaign as a whole, and ask yourself what your presence on the internet offers. If it is merely a bunch of products that everyone needs to be buying then that is the first step to advertising yourself online – but not really existing there. Additional content, such as articles, essays, photo stories, news, interactivity, etc, will all serve to make your presence more relevant in web-users lives – provided, of course, that these are of honest, transparent quality.

Here we go again. First we tell you to practice The Golden Rule, and now we seem to be suggesting the opposite. You’re right. In high school we were told to never look at our neighbor’s paper, whereas in business we’re encouraged to. Sam Walton said once that nearly all of his best ideas came from someone else’s store. He spent one day a week going to other shopkeeper’s stores looking for good ideas. Network marketers should do that too. Go to your sponsor’s meetings. Go to a strong distributor’s meeting. Learn however you can. One of the wonderful aspects of network marketing is that the normal competitiveness of the corporate world doesn’t exist. In network marketing it is possible for all players to win.

And not all great network marketing ideas will come from within your own industry. Go, for example to a Weight Watcher’s meeting and try to figure out why this is one of the most successful self-improvement programs around. Look for ideas you can adapt for your own meetings: regularly scheduled weekly meetings, weekly measurement of progress, an inspirational/educational message, commitment in the form of weekly dues, and more.

THE ONLY WAY you can possibly experience long-term success in network marketing is if you live by The Golden Rule. Treat others as you would like them to treat you. Think about what it means to provide good service. Pull out your pencil and start taking notes on the good and bad service you see. How attentive is the seller? What kinds of words is she using to talk about the product? Was she sensitive to your time? Did she express genuine interest in you? Did she seem competent? Would you come back to her again? If you can really zero in on the needs of your customers, and show how your product will meet those needs, you’ll zero in on success.

THROUGH SOME may tell you otherwise, network marketing is not a get-rich-quick enterprise. It’ll take time for you to build your organization. In fact, in the early months of your business, your hourly wage may be far less than what you’re accustomed to earning. But remember this: This is a “get-rich-slow” opportunity. Those who stick with it, who invest time and energy into their business, will be generously rewarded down the line.

Network marketers talk a lot about “growing” their businesses. The metaphor is apt. What you put in the ground today might not look like much. But over time, with lots of care and attention, that tiny little sapling can turn into something magnificent. So keep your day job. Hold off going full time until your income from network marketing is at least equal to your current salary.

There is no hiding the fact that having a work at home business has its perks over a 9 to 5 job. Because of this, the internet has blossomed with thousands of businesses and websites opening every year. Although the benefits of having an online business began quietly, no longer is it a secret that the sky is the limit online.

Working at home gives you an endless amount of freedom that you more than likely never had at your old job. You can opt to start a business or join whatever business you feel like online. And because the internet continues to evolve every day, there is a plethora of options to choose from.

If you do decide to start your own business, you are the boss. No longer do you have to take orders from anyone or deal with weekly or monthly meetings. You can choose to go whichever way you want with your business. It can be scary having all of the power in your hands, but you finally can do what you want with the business.

When you have a work at home business, you create your own schedule. This is where it can become a problem for some people because they prioritize everything else but their work. As long as you know what it is going to take to be successful with your business, there really is no set schedule. If you are on vacation and want to stay an extra few days, there is nothing stopping you. If you want to cut work a little short so you can see your kid’s basketball game, go right ahead.

Certainly the point of this article is to discuss the numerous perks you will get from having a work at home business. But this is not to say that you won’t face any kinds of adversity. Remember, when you have your own business you have to take on a number of roles. This can be stressful, but it can also be a benefit you won’t find at any other job.

At many businesses, you have one set duty that can become monotonous over time. With an online business you may market your website one day and write the content the next. More than likely you will be doing several different tasks in one day, which keeps the job exciting every day.

When you begin a work at home job, it is vital that you remember it is still a job. There are still duties to be done and at times even more work to be done than your old job. But at the end of the day you have to consider your situation and be thankful that you have the opportunity to work from the comfort of your very own home with an online business.
